Connecting the Dots: SAT Streamlining Act
Welcome to Connect Everyone Coalition’s (CEC) newest series, Connecting the Dots. We’ll get you up to speed, quickly, on the people, policies, events and technologies that are helping us bridge the digital divide and finally connect everyone, everywhere.
SAT Streamlining Act
In 30 Seconds: Less paperwork, more satellite launches. The Satellite and Telecommunications (SAT) Streamlining Act would reform the satellite licensing process at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) — with clearer deadlines and a smoother process. This means fewer hoops to jump through for American space innovators and more broadband access for more people, faster.
As CEC Sees It:
- Supporting Innovation in Space Technology = Increased Connectivity for Everyday Americans
Fiber and cell towers can’t easily reach every mountain village, island community or rural region, but low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity can. But outdated red tape around launch applications and paperwork is holding back this space innovation. By streamlining licensing approvals, this legislation will help new space technologies get into orbit more quickly — so we can FINALLY close the digital divide.
- Keeping the U.S. Competitive in the Space Economy = Economic Wins for the American People
By getting obstacles out of the way of America’s satellite industry, we can ensure that America continues to lead in space, instead being forced to play catch-up and play by the rules of our competitors. Excellence in space will continue to drive good jobs and economic growth throughout the country, from space industry hubs and launch locations to Main Streets nationwide.
During a recent webinar, CEC member and Florida Space Coast Chamber president said the economic impact of the space industry is more than $8 billion in Florida alone. Read more HERE.
State of Play: Having passed through the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science & Transportation, the SAT Streamlining Act awaits confirmation in the U.S. Senate before moving to the House of Representatives.
