ICYMI: Amazon Leo Produces More Than 1,000 Satellites to Expand Connectivity
In case you missed it, Amazon Leo recently announced that it has now produced more than 1,000 satellites. With nearly 400 satellites deployed in space — and hundreds more on standby for launch at Amazon’s payload processing facility at the Kennedy Space Center — the Amazon Leo team is building at pace and working to complete its initial constellation at its full-rate production facility in Kirkland, Washington.
An advanced production line within the Kirkland warehouse means Amazon Leo now has the capacity to produce five satellites per day — meaning while the team’s first 27 satellites took nearly six months to produce, the facility can now turn out that many in a week. Following production, Amazon Leo’s satellites are shipped to Florida every few days in preparation for launch from Cape Canaveral, where the satellite network is also fueling growth on the Space Coast, and in French Guiana.
“That ability to design, build, test, and iterate all within our team is leading to rapid performance improvements. If someone on the team has an idea on how to enhance the system, we can machine the parts and test them in space-like conditions within days.” – Taylor Matlock, Amazon Leo Propulsion Team
In addition to the workforce and economic development directly related to satellite production and launch, Oxford Economics estimates that the continued adoption of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite broadband will raise world GDP by between $32 billion and $863 billion, depending on competitiveness, affordability and the policy environment. These numbers demonstrate the importance of advanced satellite offerings and the role of connectivity to reach hard-to-serve areas and make it easier for people to live, work and communicate better.
The Connect Everyone Coalition (CEC) is encouraged by the speed of this technological growth and the work being accomplished by innovators in the space as they continue to scale tools, like LEO broadband, to reach everyone, everywhere.
