Low Earth Orbit Satellite Technology Advancements Are Powering Workforce Mobility at Amazon
Reliable broadband is essential to participating in modern life, whether that means learning online, accessing healthcare, running a small business, staying in touch with family or responding to an emergency. Connecting more communities will require not only innovative technologies like low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, but also a skilled workforce capable of building, testing and deploying them.
Investments in this skilled workforce are already underway.
Nadine Finegold began her Amazon career in 2018 at a delivery station, where she stowed packages into bins, while Jessica Hubbell started at an Amazon fulfillment center in Colorado, packing boxes. Today, both work at Amazon Leo after using Amazon’s Career Choice education benefit to develop the technical skills needed for careers in the growing space industry, a program that has helped more than 300,000 employees pursue new career opportunities.
Finegold enrolled in a six-month aerospace-manufacturing certification program at Lake Washington Institute of Technology in Kirkland, Washington, through a partnership with Amazon. The program covers aerospace assembly, electronics manufacturing, fiber optics, avionics wiring and related skills used in satellite production. After graduating in March 2025, Finegold joined Amazon Leo as a solar technician, assembling the solar panels that power satellites in orbit.
“Amazon paid for all of it and gave me a leg up,” Finegold said. “They gave me accommodations and my own computer for the first time ever. Career Choice was my golden ticket.”
Hubbell’s path followed a similar arc. She learned about Amazon’s partnership with the Lake Washington Institute of Technology while working in a fulfillment center and enrolled in the satellite-technician program. Amazon hired her before she completed the course. She now works in Amazon Leo’s space simulation lab, where she tests satellite components under the extreme conditions they will face after launch.
The story of Finegold and Hubbell illustrates how America’s growing space economy needs more than astronauts and aerospace engineers. It depends on precision assemblers, electricians, welders, logistics professionals, cybersecurity specialists and other skilled workers who turn advanced technology into operating systems that help serve communities.
