ICYMI: CEC Member Opines on Benefits of FCC Update to Satellite Spectrum Sharing
In case you missed it, CEC Member Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) applauded the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) recent Report and Order in an op-ed by TPA’s director of telecom policy, Johnny Kampis. The op-ed, titled “FCC Unleashes Satellite Broadband Expansion,” explains that the Report and Order replaces the equivalent power flux density (EPFD) framework, a ruling that boosts broadband availability for more Americans by modernizing satellite spectrum sharing.
“The previous [EPFD] framework handcuffed the performance of low-Earth orbit satellite constellations by capping signal quality and overall capacity … The FCC’s decision is a win-win for consumers. It not only helps pave the way for the BEAD-led expansion of satellite broadband as a viable source for unserved and underserved Americans, but it also increases marketplace competition, lowering subscription rates for those same households and businesses.”
As Kampis notes, the FCC’s decision to modernize space policy will improve low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite broadband capacity by sevenfold, while also increasing competition and consumer choice and serving more than 20 percent of eligible locations under the Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment (BEAD) Program.
